Considering the significance of books and reading in the cultural and scientific development of a country, and attentive to the economic and cultural problems and challenges that mark the contemporary publishing world, the Interdisciplinary School of Higher Social Studies (IDAES) and the Lectura Mundi Program of the National University of San Martín decided to create in late 2020 an institution as unprecedented as necessary in Argentina: the Center for Book Studies and Public Policies.
Faced with the recurring crises in the publishing and book sector, the marked imbalances that characterize production and access in the countries of the region, the absence of quality and updated information, and the lack of a space for meeting and dialogue between professionals, specialists and political actors, the Center intends to function as a space for research, professional training and promotion of public policies that foster structural transformations aimed at strengthening the diversity and sustainability of the sector and promoting reading both in Argentina and in Latin America in general.
